Ecuador
- Sangay National Park
IUCN Management Category: II (National Park)
Natural World Heritage Site: Criteria ii, iii, iv
Sangay (271,925ha) is situated in the Cordillera Oriental region
of the Andes in central Ecuador. The park has a spectrum of ecosystems,
ranging in altitude from tropical rainforests to glaciers, and has
two active volcanoes. Its isolation provides protection to indigenous
species, such as the mountain tapir and the Andean condor. The area
was originally gazetted as a wildlife reserve in 1975 and was given
national park status in 1979. Sangay was inscribed on the World
Heritage List in 1983. The Park was inscribed on the World Heritage
in Danger list in 1992 because of heavy poaching of wildlife, illegal
livestock grazing, encroachment along the Park's perimeter, and
unplanned road construction.
