Located in the watershed of the Rio Platano in the Mosquita region
of north-east Honduras, the reserve is one of the few remnants of
humid tropical forest in Central America. The biosphere reserve
contains abundant and varied plant and wildlife and over 2,000 indigenous
people. The area covers a total of 500,000ha, of which 350,000ha
constitute the biosphere reserve and 150,000ha a buffer zone. The
area was gazetted as an archaeological national park in 1969. It
was internationally recognised as a Biosphere Reserve under UNESCO's
Man and the Biosphere Programme in 1980 and inscribed on the World
Heritage List in 1982.Rio Platano was placed on the List of World
Heritage in Danger in 1996 due to commercial and agricultural intrusions
into the site.
