IUCN Management Category: II (National Park)
Natural World Heritage Site: Criteria ii, iv

Kaziranga National Park lies in the flood plains of the Brahmaputra River in Assam. The riverine habitat consists primarily of dense grasslands interspersed with open forests. Over three-quarters of the area is submerged annually by the flood waters of the Brahmaputra. The park contains about 15 species of India's threatened mammals, including the largest population of one-horned rhinoceroses in the world. According to official records, the land area is 37,822ha. The area, originally established as a reserved forest in 1908, was declared a national park in 1974, and was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1985.
