Kaziranga National Park lies in the flood plains of the Brahmaputra
River in Assam. The riverine habitat consists primarily of dense
grasslands interspersed with open forests. Over three-quarters of
the area is submerged annually by the flood waters of the Brahmaputra.
The park contains about 15 species of India's threatened mammals,
including the largest population of one-horned rhinoceroses in the
world. According to official records, the land area is 37,822ha.
The area, originally established as a reserved forest in 1908, was
declared a national park in 1974, and was inscribed on the World
Heritage List in 1985.
