South Africa - Greater St Lucia Wetland Park

IUCN Management Category: IV (Managed Nature Reserve)
World Heritage Site: Criteria i, iii and iv

The Greater St Lucia Wetland Park is made up of a complex of protected areas covering 239,566ha on the eastern coast of South Africa, in Kwazulu-Natal Province south of Swaziland and Mozambique. The ongoing fluvial, marine and aeolian processes in the site have produced a variety of landforms including coral reefs, long sandy beaches, coastal dunes, lake systems, swamps, and extensive reed and papyrus wetlands. The site contains critical habitat for a range of species from Africa's marine, wetland and savannah environments. The park was inscribed as a World Heritage site in 1999.
