IUCN Management Category: II (National Park)
Natural World Heritage Site: Criteria iii, iv
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (32,092 ha) is located in South-West
Uganda. The park's rare afromontane vegetation provides one of the
richest habitats in East Africa for birds, butterflies, trees and
mammals, the latter includes chimpanzees and more than half of the
world's remaining mountain gorillas - over 300 individuals. Sectors
of the forest have been protected since the 1930s. The National
Park was gazetted in 1991 and inscribed as a World Heritage Site
in 1994.
